| "How did New York get the name ""Big Apple""?
|
In 1971, Charles Gillett, president of New York Convention and Tourist Bureau, launched a campaign to remind people that, despite some serious problems it has at the time, New York was still a great city in which to have a good time. He reached backinto the jazz ara of the 1930's and plucked a phrase from the musicians of the day. To play in New York, they said, was the epitome of recognition and while there were may apples on the tree, only one could be the biggest. Thus, to them Manhattan was "the big apple." Gillett's urban tourism campaign became the most famous of them all. He even initiated lapel pins worn by some native and not so native New Yorkers. In souvenir shops everywhere in New York, You'll fine huge chocolate apples, appleT-shirts, ashtrays, ties, stationery, etc. Flordia has picked up on the idea and now calls Miami the "Big Orange."
